Our supermarkets are part of a long and complex supply chain. At every stage there are responsibilities that we take very seriously. Sourcing with integrity is important to our customers, communities, colleagues and investors.

Highlights of 2005/06

‘Farm Promise’ milk

We launched a unique ‘Farm Promise’ milk supporting farmers with a guaranteed income to convert to organic. Read more about Farm Promise milk

Re-using waste CO2

We launched a scheme in NE England to grow tomatoes 52 weeks of the year, reusing waste CO2, so that customers can buy British tomatoes all year round. Read more about Re-using waste CO2

Organic produce

We are on track to source 70% of organic produce from the UK by the end of 2006. Read more about Organic produce

Fresh eggs moved

In line with our target of ensuring 70% of our eggs are from non-caged birds we moved all standard fresh eggs from caged to barn systems. Read more about Fresh eggs moved

High risk fish

Woodland organic eggs

‘Taste of Britain’

We supported the Daily Telegraph ‘Taste of Britain’ campaign promoting British sourcing. Read more about Taste of Britain

British organic beef

We were the first supermarket to sign a partnership contract for British organic beef supply, thus giving certainty for the farmer. Read more about British organic beef

Fairtrade retailer

We are the leading Fairtrade retailer with record sales of over £1m during Fairtrade fortnight (March 2006). Read more about Fairtrade retailer

Fish spawning season

We began the process to stop selling any fish caught in peak spawning season – to be completed by Autumn 2006. Read more about Fish spawning season

Animal welfare standards
